How much life insurance do you need?

A straightforward tool plus the logic behind it: how long you need support, what you owe, what schooling might cost, and what savings you already have.

The standard approach adds up your annual income over your planning horizon, then subtracts what you've already saved or what your employer provides through group benefits. The result doesn't need to be perfect—term policies come in standard increments—because the goal is simply an adequate figure to sustain your household through the years that count most.

Coverage estimate

$1,765,000

Formula: (annual income × years needed) + outstanding debts + education goals − existing savings or coverage, rounded to the nearest five thousand. Use this as your starting estimate, not as expert advice.

Why those inputs

Time needed for support. The standard recommendation is ten to twenty years, but what works for you depends on when your dependents would be self-sufficient. In Imperial Beach, where families with younger children often balance expensive housing, childcare, and education, many select longer periods.

Debt obligations. The mortgage is usually the biggest for families. The right coverage amount would let your survivors decide their future without being constrained by cash needs.

Education costs. Budget a conservative amount per child in today's money. Including this now is simpler than adding another policy later.

Assets and plans in place. Include savings available for emergencies, and workplace insurance coverage. Keep in mind that most workplace plans end when the job does, so account for that as you decide what portion to count on.

Once you know your number, the quote tool can show you what that amount costs across multiple carriers for periods ranging from 10 to 30 years. People often buy somewhat more than the estimate because the difference in cost is modest at younger ages.
