Health classes explained

How the four main classes are labeled, what separates them, and what typically moves someone between them.

Each carrier assigns underwriting tiers. While names shift slightly, the sequence is consistent: Preferred Plus (also known as Super Preferred, or Elite by some carriers), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, plus higher ratings for cases with more risk. Tobacco users face the same structure at higher premiums.

What underwriters look at

Body measurements, blood pressure and lipid panel, parents' or siblings' early heart or cancer history, clean driving record, what you take or have taken by prescription, your work and hobbies, and tobacco or nicotine products. The top rating needs clean marks in nearly all categories. Preferred allows a degree more flexibility. Standard Plus and Standard allow treated conditions such as managed hypertension.

How to use the quote tool

Be truthful about your health: Excellent corresponds to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus, and Average to Standard. The quote assumes that tier, which the carrier verifies after underwriting. When in doubt, quote yourself in two classes to see the difference, then let the underwriting decision be final. Claiming a better class than you qualify for doesn't lower your actual payment—it just makes the estimate wrong.

Susman Insurance Agency's expertise includes knowing which carriers have more flexible underwriting for specific health conditions—often as important as the base rate.
